XBox Kinect Hacked by UW Students for a Good Cause

Well, we do know that Kinect is very vulnerable to hacks but this hack that we’ll discuss in this post is pretty remarkable and that too, coming for a good cause, for robotic surgeries. Yes, this is coming from a cluster of pupils at the University of Washington, who intend to pair Microsoft‘s Kinect with various robotic surgery projects at the university’s BioRobotics Lab.

The students intend to use Kinect to give force-feedback to surgeons operating the robotic equipment, which is saving about $50,000 proposition with the use of Kinect.

We know, you might have thought the other way, that big bad robot concept in your mind that may do it all on its own, the entire surgery without the need of humans. However, the Kinect-based system still isn’t completely ready for use in actual surgery, since the pupils at University of Washington have felt that the sensors need to be reduced proportionally, and a few improvements in resolution in order to make it suitable for surgical use.
